Earth Month Spotlight: Bozal Mezcal

Calling all tequila lovers! You need to try Bozal Mezcal!

While tequila and mezcal are both agave-based spirits from Mexico, they differ in the type of agave used, the production process, and the aging process, which gives them distinct flavors and characteristics. Tequila can only be made from blue agave plants grown in specific regions of Mexico, primarily in the state of Jalisco and some other designated areas, while mezcal can be made from any type of agave plant grown in several states in Mexico. This artisanal brand of mezcal from Mexico is known for its complex flavor profile and unique production methods. Made from multiple species of the agave plant, mezcal has a smokier and more complex taste compared to tequila. Bozal Mezcal takes it to the next level by sourcing agave from different regions of Mexico, each with its own distinctive terroir and agave varieties. This results in a range of mezcal flavors and nuances that are truly unique.

To make tequila, the agave plants are typically steamed or baked in an oven before they are distilled. Bozal, on the other hand, follows the traditional mezcal production methods, including roasting the agave in underground pits, crushing it with a tahona, and fermenting it in open-air tanks using natural yeasts. The result is a mezcal that is complex and aromatic with a distinctive smoky flavor.

Bozal offers a variety of mezcal options, each with its own distinct flavor profile. The Bozal Ensemble Mezcal, a blend of three different agave varieties, is a complex and layered mezcal with a balance of fruity, floral, and smoky notes. On the other hand, the Bozal Tobasiche Single Maguey Mezcal is made exclusively from Tobasiche agave, creating a smooth and elegant spirit with a floral and fruity aroma. Both Bozal Mezcals are highly regarded for their quality and complexity, making them some of our personal favorites!
