It takes a village to make a bottle of wine. That’s the saying, right?
For Bodegas Artuke it can take three. The estate’s vineyards are in the villages of Baños de Ebros, Abalos, and San Vicente. Each one provides different terroir and climate conditions for the grapes.
The Blanco family’s belief in the land and fruit from these villages is why they abandoned the traditional Rioja classification system. This system is based on barrel-aging and time requirements, but comes with much-needed recognition. The family considered this to be a risky move, but it paid off. It appears this system is also just now getting a makeover!
Baños de Ebro, with its continental climate and chalky clay soils, provides the grapes for this specific wine.
